SEDATION & ADVANCED ANESTHESIA
Let’s face it, not everyone looks forward to visiting the dentist. Some people would rather tolerate the pain of a toothache than step foot in a dentist’s office. Some people are so apprehensive about going to the dentist that they prefer not to have any treatment. However, regular dental visits are essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. For those who get worked up about going to the dentist, sedation dentistry may be a helpful tool. Sedation can be used for everything from root canals to a simple tooth cleaning. How it’s used depends on the severity of the fear. Contact Waco Surgical Arts today at (254) 537-1071 to learn more about sedation dentistry.
WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?
Sedation dentistry, also known as “sleep dentistry” uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Patients are usually awake with the exception of those who are under general anesthesia. All dental treatment by Dr. Beck will be completed pain free.
LEVELS OF SEDATION:
There are four levels of sedation:
Minimal sedation: The patient takes an elixir or pill and will be awake but relaxed during procedure.
Moderate sedation: An IV is inserted and you’re able to speak but you may not remember much of the procedure.
Deep sedation: An IV is inserted with a high dose putting you in a deep consciousness but you can still be awakened. General anesthesia: You are completely unconscious and not able to be awakened.
TYPES OF SEDATION:
There are three types of sedation:
Inhaled sedation: You breathe "laughing gas" combined with oxygen through a mask that's placed over your nose.
Oral sedation: The sedative drug is taken in a pill or drink form.
IV sedation: You receive the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes to work more quickly.
